Empowering Future Leaders

WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As the Principal of Monument Primary School, daily I am humbled by the enormous responsibility the rest of the staff and I have of ensuring that the next generation of leaders is properly nurtured, developed, challenged and inspired. With a rich heritage that dates back to 1953, Monument Primary’s approach to education is based on sound traditional values, servant leadership and a collaborative effort that embraces a love of learning in a diverse and real-world environment. The school’s diverse and balanced offering of academic pedigree and sporting and cultural excellence, make it a favourite amongst parents looking for a safe place to expand their children’s education and learning whilst providing them with a firm footing and foundation to flourish and live out rewarding and constructive lives ahead.

As a team of 21st Century educators attuned to a very dynamic global reality, we like to see ourselves as life learners, and this spills over into the children we teach. Our team of dedicated full-time staff and interns choose to be at the cutting edge of education, flexible to embrace the intersection between technology and more traditional classroom-based teaching. Supported by first class facilities, Monument Primary strives to provide a solid, fully rounded and holistic education for our learners that inspires them to reach their full potential. It is our hope that learners emerge from our doors confident, respectful, socially aware and independent thinkers.

To our prospective parents thank you for visiting our website! It is our invitation to you to catch a glimpse of the fun, happy warm and vibrant and rigorous learning community that we call our school.

OUR HISTORY

Today if you take a trip to the school archives you will be welcomed by two oversized leather books that beautifully capture Monument Primary’s story dating back to the school’s governing body’s first meeting in July of 1953, the minutes of which are neatly typed and preserved. Read as a novel, the pages reveal that the school started with some 163 pupils on its roll, appointing Mr G.S. van Niekerk as the first principal who had a strong desire to start a library as one of his first initiatives at the genesis of the school. Monument Primary’s foundations embrace old world charm – a piano was one of the first purchases made to expand children’ appreciation of music. The purchase of recorders followed in subsequent years. Sport was equally important with athletics being the first physical activity offered to the learners. Basketball, cricket and rugby were also introduced early on in the school history. Monument Primary initially had an Afrikaans medium and a separate English medium and was culturally and politically progressive given the times, introducing diversity to the learner pool very early on in its history. The development of the school grounds happened in stages with extra staff employed to level the initial playing fields. Part of the initial infrastructure included the development of additional classrooms, a library, an art and culture classroom, a dedicated music room, sick room and swimming bath. Virus and bacterial outbreaks are not just present-day challenges, the minutes recall in the early years of Monument Primary’s establishment Polio, Measles and Chickenpox were common national outbreaks that caused school disruptions then too. The numbers of learners and teachers remained in flux, following parents’ and the teachers spouses’ having their work transfer them in and out of Krugersdorp’s dynamic mining community.
