Cultural Programme
Monument Primary believes in creating opportunities for learners to experiment, express and articulate themselves and develop their imagination, critical to their intellectual development. Music, clubs and dramatic productions form the backbone of this sphere of school life, encouraging visual and cultural awareness. The school’s facilities include two art & culture classrooms, a music room, a fully serviced school hall for school productions. In collaboration with independent providers instruments taught include piano, recorder, guitar and voice training. A bi-annual Eisteddfod gives learners a chance to excel in poetry recitals and dramatic presentations in both of our languages, English and Afrikaans.

FOUNDATION PHASE CULTURE
Junior song group
All learners in grade 1 – 3 get the opportunity to audition to join the Junior song group. After placing all learners, we prepare them to perform in multiple languages and different types of music. We aim to have 80 learners in the group. The Junior song group take part in Eisteddfods and RACA where they are judged. We perform at our Cultural evening, Christmas Carols and Choir festivals. Practice times are on a Wednesday for an hour. Our aim is to give the learners an opportunity to feel comfortable performing in front of an audience.
Recorders
We start with interested Grade 2 learners and motivate participation in different groups until they leave the school in grade 7. Each group practices once a week. We perform as groups and Solo’s at Monument and participate in Eisteddfod and RACA. They will also perform at the Cultural evening and Carols evening.
Foundation Phase Choral verse
We have Grade R, 1,2 and 3 perform at the RACA in Afrikaans and English. Learners recite a poem and improvise it with actions. We perform at our Cultural evening, RACA, Carols evening and Cultural festivals.
Drama
We are excited to introduce our Grade 1,2 and 3 learners with an opportunity to express themselves through performing in front of the school in Assemblies, at our Cultural evening and Carol’s evening. We will also perform at festivals. Our aim is to prepare the learners to perform with confidence and shape the learners to develop their self-esteem.
