Sporting Programme
Athletics
Athletics Monument Primary School
Monument Primary Athletics believes in enriching and developing all our sporting codes with the exposure to athletics. We believe that the athletics season prepares our learners for greater performance in other sporting codes. Athletics plays an important role in the self-development of a child. Exposure to athletics gives the learner the opportunity to showcase their talent, create friendships and learn valuable lessons when winning isn’t always possible.
Some of our successful results:
2019 – 13 Krugersdorp Colours & 4 Gauteng Colours
2022 – 20 Krugersdorp Colours & 6 Gauteng Colours
2023 – 16 Krugersdorp Colours & 2 Gauteng Colours
We are extremely proud of all these athletes for their diligence and commitment throughout the season to be able to get to the highest level possible and are excited with what the future holds in store for Monument Primary School Athletics.
Mr W Botha – Head of Sport
Mr M Shuping & Mrs A vd Merwe – Athletics co-ordinators

Cricket
Cricket is a sport played in term 3 at Monument Primary. We play in the Gauteng West League 1 which is the top league in the Gauteng West Region. We field up to 5 teams from U9 to U13s. The sport also usually averages between 15 and 20 Gauteng West players per season which represent the region in a provincial tournament.
The school has recently added a girls’ team which has now been active for the last 2 years. We have had a great response to this with over 25 girls (ages ranging from 9 to 13) participating per season.
The cricket at Monument Primary is constantly looking to improve and provide future superstars for our nation.

Equestrian
Monument Primary has a long and proud tradition of nurturing young riders who take part in the SANESA inter-school competitions under the school’s banner. Riders compete in four qualifiers per year, where they will then be chosen for the Gauteng Teams to participate in Nationals against the other Provinces.

Hockey
Boys
Monument Primary boys’ hockey prides itself on two principles, namely discipline and respect. Monument Primary boys’ hockey has been one of the top performing sports in our school as well as the district over the past few years, and the results are a testament to that, with the 1st team boys winning the D2 league for 9 consecutive years. The 1st team boys have also made us proud by being provincial Champs 3 times. Monument Primary’s 1st team boys have also represented Monument at nationals 3 times being runners-up once in 2015 and winning in 2016. Monument Primary has also produced many provincial players and up to date Monument Primary has produced a collective of 5 National/Junior National hockey players.
Girls
Monument Primary expertly coaches and manages separate girls’ hockey teams into various age groups, that have won in district leagues, and claimed some significant ground in provincial championships such as the Gauteng West league.
Attention is paid mainly to bettering and improving the skill level of each individual. Teams attend and participate in various festivals and events where these skills are put to the test. The aim is enjoyment and results are irrelative to every age group. We have had a few past pupils represent at Junior and at National level over the past few years too.

Netball
The netball season is always jam packed with action both on and off the field. All of the netball teams at Monument Primary are known to achieve remarkable results on the courts and have in the past been award laureates of the D 2 (Gauteng West) League and Jomo League. Players continue to show exceptional sportsmanship and have also been crowned Krugersdorp Champions. Various staff members serve as umpires in these matches. The “Best of West” tournament is one of the most important netball festivals the school participates in, as an opportunity to prepare for the season ahead. Players are also encouraged to participate in an annual netball camp.

Rugby
Our current coaches are:
U/9 Mr Strudwick and B Liebenberg
U/10 Mr Shuping and B James
U/11 Mr J Godwin and Mr Godwin
2nd Team Mr M Snyman and J van Wyk
1st Team Mr Magalakangqa and Mr F Du Toit
We strive not to make them springboks we strive to make them better than what they believe they are. Developing them holistically and in a moral way.
We have had amazing seasons the last few years where we won the Sub – Super in 2021 and came second in 2022.

Tennis
Monument Primary School Tennis
Tennis is one of our upcoming sporting codes. We have Mini-Tennis from 2024 for our Foundation Phase learners and then our junior team (Grade 4 & 5) and senior team (Grade 6 & 7). We help develop a love for a classic sport which develops the skills of tennis enthusiasts attending Monument Primary School. We help learners with inherent talent to grow into well-rounded players that are technically, and emotionally ready for competitive play.
We host events at participating schools where all our tennis players can test their skills against their peers. Mrs. A. van der Merwe – Tennis co-ordinator

Swimming
Monument Primary is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to swimming and has a long history of developing winning swimmers who achieve exceptional results in the water at various league galas, the direct result of dedication, commitment and hard work from coaches and all participating swimmers. Through a lot of guts and determination, Monument Primary’s swimmers have in the past been crowned overall winners of the Johannesburg League, the West Rand Gala, the C-League and Inter Schools Night Galas. Swimmers have also displayed astonishing results at the CGA and SANJ (South African Junior Nationals). The school has two competing teams – an A and a B team particularly skilled in backstroke and breaststroke.

Mini-Hockey
Mini-hockey is there to develop the skills of those in Grade R- Grade 3. We participate in mini- hockey matches and festivals to further the development of the skills that we practice.
Mini-Cricket
At Monument Primary School our Grade R to 2 boys and girls have the opportunity to take part in mini-cricket. We play friendly matches against our neighbouring schools as well as mini sport festivals that take place on Saturdays. Our pre-season training starts at the end of Term 2, followed by the official season in Term 3.
Mini-Netball
We offer mini-netball coaching and skill development at our school. Our trained and experienced coaches work according to a program to help build the girls into little netball super stars. Teams are chosen to represent Monument Primary at matches and the girls who are not part of the teams are still welcome to join practices where skills are fine tuned to help them develop where needed.
Mini-Rugby
We offer mini-rugby coaching and skill development at our school. Our trained and experienced coaches work according to a program to help build our boys into little aspiring rugby players. Teams are chosen to represent Monument Primary at matches and the boys who are not part of the teams are still welcome to join practices where skills are fine tuned to help them develop where needed.
